The latest round of Oscar nominations have just been announced, and although Robert De Niro was snubbed for a Best Actor nod, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman managed to score a whopping 10 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor for Joe Pesci and Al Pacino. After years of trying to claw their way in, Netflix finally has a chance at winning a couple of major Academy Awards....

iDevices, a company that makes many popular iPhone connected household products, today announced that it’s selling its iGrill and Kitchen Thermometer brands to Weber, a longtime leader manufacturing grills and grilling accessories. The two product lines include Bluetooth, smartphone-controlled thermometer, grilling, and cooking accessories and companion apps. Weber is acquiring the brands and planning to release new version of the product later this year. iDevices isn’t exactly getting out of the space, however, as it sounds like the company will continue to work on the product lines under Weber’s control....

iDevices today has unveiled a new connected wall switch that it says lets users seamlessly control their other iDevice accessories and their smart home products. Dubbed the Instant Switch, iDevices touts this accessory as an “intelligently-designed wireless remote wall switch… The company explains that this switch allows users to pair with their other iDevices products via Bluetooth for easy control. Essentially, the iDevices Instant Switch allows users to easily control lights and accessories in hard to reach places, as well as outdoor lighting from inside....

The Wall Street Journal has a story today on HP CEO Meg Whitman “taking a cue from Apple” and planning to release a redesigned line of PCs that could one day rival Apple. While mentioning the “brick” of a company laptop she received when taking over as CEO in September 2011, Whitman discussed the company’s struggle to keep up with Apple’s product design: HP executive Stacy Wolff is behind the new look, which he explained uses a common color palette, standard logo size, and reduced components “so that a computer’s chassis, for example, was a single piece of metal or plastic, instead of multiple pieces....

The new HP Spectre x360 is touted as one of the thinnest convertible notebooks in the market and it is pretty light at 1.26kgs. HP claims that they have made some minor changes to the design and this includes a more angular body that is paired with Dark Ash Silver and Copper accents. Other novelties in the Spectre X360 include an integrated privacy screen option and fingerprint login. Vikram Bedi, Senior Director HP was quoted as follows, “HP is setting new industry standards for design, security and performance” he further added that “Our Spectre portfolio is redefining the premium PC segment, providing unique user experiences that inspire creativity and unlock limitless opportunities to bring incredible ideas to life....

Do you own an HTC One (M8) and itch to try out CyanogenMod on it? Well, here is some good news for you. Starting today, the CyanogenMod team will begin rolling out official CM11 nightlies for HTC’s latest flagship. The nightly builds will be available under the ‘m8’ codename and will support the GSM as well as the CDMA (read Sprint and Verizon) variants. Do keep in mind that the first builds might be a bit buggier than usual so if stability is of your prime concern, it’s better to wait for a couple of weeks before installing CyanogenMod on your One (M8)....

At an event in Shanghai, China, HTC announced its flagship handset for the country — the One M9+. On paper, the handset packs better specs than the One M9, which includes a 5.2-inch Quad HD display and a fingerprint sensor. The MediaTek chipset on the handset might not perform as well as the Snapdragon 810 chip found inside the One M9, but it is likely that it will help the M9+ to deliver better battery life and not face any overheating issues faced by its international sibling....

HTC has started sending out invites for its “Double Exposure” event to be held in New York on October 8. The teaser image does not reveal anything about the event but does show two ladies using an HTC One M8 and probably taking a selfie. It is tough to tell if the event is for the new Nexus 9 tablet that HTC is working on with Google or for a new selfie focused phone from the Taiwanese OEM....

IBM this evening has announced a new dedicated health unit that will deepen its relationship with Apple. The service, called Watson Health, will use the data collected with Apple’s HealthKit and ResearchKit services to provide information to various other companies including Johnson & Johnson and Medtronic. From there, those companies can integrate the data into services they offer to healthcare companies. Apple will work to integrate Watson-based apps into HealthKit and ResearchKit for these purposes (via Forbes)....

Apple has added the new purchased section to App Store and iTunes storefront apps on iOS devices with the introduction of iOS 5 back at WWDC in June. As a result, people can re-download their purchased songs, apps and books on any iOS devices. However, for large libraries this can become a cumbersome process as the iPhone’s and iPad’s interface doesn’t lend itself too well to multiple re-downloads....
