STORM: A Star Wars Indie - Official Trailer from Michael McGrady

Funny or Die releases a fake trailer for an independent film set in the Star Wars universe. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is days away from being released in theaters and - as is always the case when a new Star Wars film comes out - anticipation is high. The reviews for The Last Jedi so far have been positive and fans are ready to find out the answers to many of the questions asked in Star Wars: The Force Awakens - such as who Rey’s parents are, what has Luke been doing all this time, and whether Finn and Poe are going to be romantically involved or remain friends.

In anticipation of the movie’s release, the internet has been filling up with fan videos and posts. Many are reviews from early screenings, but others have been humorous commentary on Star Wars as a whole. Popular YouTube channel ScreenJunkies just released an Honest Trailer for Return of the Jedi while CinemaSins made a sin video for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. And they are not the only ones getting in on the fun.

There’s a channel on Funny or Die called booyapictures with an impressive collection of fan videos. While they have had some fun with Star Wars content before - including a video called The Farts Awaken - today they outdid themselves with a trailer for an independent romance set in the Star Wars universe titled Storm: A Star Wars Indie.

Storm: A Star Wars Indie is the story of Ian, an unhappy stormtrooper who takes care of his ailing father and would rather be a musician. An encounter with a Rodian - the same species as Greedo from A New Hope - named Teedo changes everything. The two share a beautiful love story, which is quickly threatened by social pressures against different species in relationships, Ian’s fathers and his prejudice, and Ian’s hated job as a stormtrooper.

The trailer pulls off a delicate balance of Star Wars references - Teedo’s first words to Ian are especially on the nose - and common indie movie tropes including the dying parent and a relationship facing prejudice. The soft background music and fake reviews add to the effect. And while the story is a dramatic one, the video is a comedy and offers an occasional reminder with phrases like, “Your father has space cancer,” and, “I can fly any ship in the galaxy except a relationship,” given with completely straight faces.

Storm: A Star Wars Indie might not be a real film. But for Star Wars fans anticipating The Last Jedi who want to make the next few days go by faster, can count on it for a couple minutes of laughs and a distraction from wondering which of the many theories about Rey will turn out to be true.
