Horror icon Kane Hodder - the only man to ever play Jason Voorhees in multiple films - wants to take a shot at playing Halloween’s Michael Myers. Every generation of horror films produces a few iconic actors, people who become forever associated with the genre and tend to receive unwavering respect from fans. In the early days of Hollywood, those icons were people like Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, and Lon Chaney. In the 80s slasher era, new icons were born, including Robert “Freddy” Englund, Doug “Pinhead” Bradley, and Bruce “Ash” Campbell.
Another horror mainstay from that era is Kane Hodder, the only actor to ever don Jason Voorhees’ hockey mask in more than one Friday the 13th film. A veteran stuntman before he transitioned over to much more often being in front of the camera than behind it, Hodder first played Jason in 1988’s Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, and would return for 1989’s Jason Takes Manhattan, 1993’s Jason Goes to Hell, and 2002’s Jason X.
While Hodder’s tenure as Jason is quite well-regarded - to the point where him being passed over for the role in 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason drew tons of fan ire - he’s actually played several other popular horror villains, albeit briefly. Hodder played Freddy in the closing tag of Jason Goes to Hell, in which Freddy’s glove drags Jason’s mask down to the underworld. He also played Leatherface in several scenes of 1990 sequel Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III. With those bragging rights under his belt, Hodder recently told We Got This Covered that he would love to get a chance to play Halloween boogeyman Michael Myers at some point.
As cool as the idea of Kane Hodder playing Michael Myers might sound to horror diehards though, one wonders how likely it is to actually happen. While Hodder still works all the time within the genre - even recently reprising swamp-dwelling slasher favorite Victor Crowley in the fourth installment of the Hatchet franchise - it’s been awhile since he’s been part of a big mainstream studio horror film. Plus, creator/producer John Carpenter has said that he intends the recently filmed Halloween (2018) to serve as an ending to the story that began back in 1978.
“It’s pretty cool to say I did one shot as Freddy, several scenes as Leatherface, four of the movies as Jason. I just need to do a movie version somehow of Michael [Myers].”
On the other hand, if Halloween (2018) makes money, it’s likely Myers won’t be on the shelf for too long, whether Carpenter personally wants him to be there or not. Still, even if another Halloween is made, it’s possible Blumhouse and Universal might want to start from scratch with an unknown actor playing Myers. Whether or not Hodder ever does get his wish to wear Michael’s white William Shatner mask onscreen, at least he finally did get to play Jason again last year, in the form of doing all the motion capture for Friday The 13th: The Game’s kills.
