Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk will have a major storyline from Avengers: Infinity War that carries into Untitled Avengers. Since taking over the role of Bruce Banner aka Hulk in The Avengers, Ruffalo has transformed the character into a beloved one within the MCU fan community. He’s been a source of consistently great action, but has also been given the opportunity to explore the inner workings of the character. Avengers: Age of Ultron introduced audiences to his relationship with Black Widow, but last we saw of him, he sent himself off world - setting up his appearance in Thor: Ragnarok.

Ruffalo has stated before that Hulk’s storyline in Ragnarok, Infinity War, and Avengers 4 will amount to enough story for his own solo film - one that he also just said will never happen. However, thanks to the super secrecy of the next two Avengers films, how exactly he gets involved remains to be seen. We have seen him on set with his fellow science bros, and his involvement will launch Hulk’s next arc.

Following his appearance at the live-action panel at D23, Ruffalo walked the press line just like his fellow Marvel stars that were in attendance. One of these stops led him to Erik Davis of Fandango, where he was asked about Hulk’s story. While there is no direct quote from Ruffalo yet, Davis summarizes that Infinity War is merely the beginning.

Without knowing exactly what Ruffalo said, it is difficult to pinpoint where this story will go because we know so little. That said, following the Avengers’ first encounter with Thanos, it is not surprising that it will have major ramifications on each and every one of them. We know Banner/Hulk is involved in Infinity War, but so far have no idea how he fits in. The footage description for the D23 Infinity War footage reveals Thor’s whereabouts post-Ragnarok, but there was no mention of Hulk.

Fans have already seen elements of Planet Hulk, one of Hulk’s most famous comic stories, is being brought into Ragnarok, but it does not appear that it would touch base on the follow up story, World War Hulk. Kevin Feige has said that the title for Avengers 4 is a spoiler for Infinity War, and if Hulk does have a major storyline launched from Infinity War, having him turn on his fellow heroes and be out for vengeance would fit that description.

Hopefully the direct quote will be released soon and provide further insight on what exactly this storyline could be, though Ruffalo knows better than to say anything that is too spoilery at this point in his MCU career. But, it is fun speculation nonetheless and assures Hulk fans that he will not just have a side role in the upcoming two-parter. In the meantime, we’ll have to wait until next year to figure out for sure what this major storyline will be.
