Rivalries aren’t necessarily a bad thing. Antagonisms between Marvel and DC fans, while sometimes disruptive, also causes their respective companies to push boundaries and hone their films to razor sharp points. One of the most amusing back-and-forths of the comic book universe isn’t even between faux-nemeses Marvel and DC, but between Marvel’s Deadpool a.k.a. Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). Their rivalry has actually underpinned the jocular nature of the superhero cohorts and cemented a legitimate bond between both the characters and the actors.

Since the less-than-impressive first outing of Reynold’s Merc With a Mouth character in the less-than-impressive X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the pair have become a regular Marvel Cinematic Universe odd couple. Not long ago, Fox dropped a Deadpool teaser where the snarky anti-hero poked fun at his role in Origins, claiming it was a “career low” for the character. He also dogged on Australia and Australia Day, as well as blaming the country for Wolverine – not Hugh Jackman, mind you, but Wolverine – and the disappointing first Wolverine feature.

Naturally, Australian actor Hugh Jackman had to respond. When asked about the clip at Sundance (view the video below), the actor said: “Love it. It’s just brilliant. I mean, I love Ryan, he’s a good mate of mine. He’s so fantastic.” However, the actor didn’t entirely slough off Reynold’s snarky mercenary, saying a rematch wouldn’t be out of the question:

“I’ve never thought about it till now, but doing something with Ryan – he’s awesome – that’s always attractive to me. But I think you’ve probably got several other people lined up to play [Wolverine].”

This isn’t the first time the two superhero actors have “feuded” either. Last fall, Reynolds took to Twitter in full Deadpool regalia. Affecting a mock-Australian accent, he pretended to be Hugh Jackman trolling for People’s ‘Sexiest Man of the Year’ votes. The fun history of pranks and rebuttles between the two actors/characters has been good publicity for the upcoming Deadpool film and also gave a distinctive voice to the quip-a-minute, fourth-wall shattering character, who was all but mute in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Although the actor claims the next James “Logan” Howlett picture, Wolverine 3 will see him hanging up his adamantium claws, Jackman has hinted about cameos and bit roles before, at one point saying he’d be up for a part in Deadpool. It’s sad to see Hugh Jackman leave the role he defined, but the actor makes a good point about not staying in one role for too long. It would be great, though, if he could go out with a real bang. If Jackman isn’t in the Deadpool movie, then perhaps it’s not too late to get Reynolds’ Deadpool to make an appearance in Wolverine 3.

Deadpool opens in theaters on February 12, 2016, followed by X-Men: Apocalypse on May 27, 2016; Gambit sometime in 2017; Wolverine 3 on March 3, 2017; and an untitled X-Men film on July 13, 2018. The New Mutants is also currently in development.
